President’s Message

Diane LilkoIt’s that time of year again! It’s your opportunity to let National know what a great chapter we have in Northeast Ohio.

On October 29, you should have received a “Member Satisfaction Survey” on behalf of our chapter, conducted by National HFMA.

Your participation in this survey is important for many reasons.

First, in order to meet our chapter goals set by HFMA National we need to have at least a 60% response rate at very or extremely satisfied. The results are sent to us in January and this represents one third of our overall point goal on our Chapter Balanced Scorecard.

In addition, the officers and board members review the results to measure how we are doing in our member’s eyes. But most important, we read your comments and advice and use that information to set our goals for each year. In the current year, our leadership has set 3 goals based on last year’s responses.

  1. We have formed a communications committee to find better more convenient ways to reach our members.
  2. We have formed a collaborative event committee to provide a different venue for those who cannot take as much time away from a busy work schedule.
  3. We are reaching out to providers in the eastern parts of our state to provide programming convenient to our members in those locations.

In addition to the above we will continue with our high quality programming throughout the year.

I encourage you to participate in the survey and to participate in our events. We are particularly excited about our upcoming event at The Cleveland Convention Center. We will be among the first groups in after the opening of the Global Center for Health Innovation. Our program offers high educational content, great networking opportunities as well as a tour of the new center.

chris MilliganGreetings Northeast Ohio HFMA!

My name is Chris Milligan. I have been given the honor of serving as your regional executive for this chapter year (2013/2014). As regional executive, my responsibility is to serve as a liaison to national for all the chapters within region six (Ohio and Michigan). I serve as a direct link between national and the leadership of your chapter and act as an advocate on behalf of the members.

Since taking on this role in May, I have had the pleasure of working closely with the leadership of Northeast Ohio through the Leadership Training Conference, Annual National Institute, Fall President’s Meeting and monthly conference calls. You should all be very proud of the outstanding job your chapter leadership is doing! If you are not currently involved in your chapter in some capacity, I would strongly encourage you to consider getting connected. Over the past 15 years that I have been involved in HFMA on both a local and regional level, I have developed great relationships that have helped me in my career growth and success. As the saying goes, you get out of it more than you ever put into it. 

The Northeast Ohio leadership has done an outstanding job to make sure your chapter is not only hitting but also exceeding the goals established by national through the Chapter Balance Scorecard (CBS) process. Specifically, Northeast Ohio is exceeding your goals in the areas of, DCMS on-time reporting and board composition and you are on target to exceed your education hours, membership and membership satisfaction goals. I have no doubt these efforts will result in your chapter, once again, being recognized for your success at this year’s Annual National Institute, to be held in Las Vegas on June 22-25, 2014.

Additionally, in order to make sure the chapter is providing you value, local leadership has been focusing on improving the quality of education and networking events.

On a regional level, your membership, along with the membership of the other six chapters within the region, have been working to improve education opportunities through a regional webinar series and improving the certification process by developing a regional committee to focus on the value that being certified provides you. 

National continues to be sensitive to these issues and has listened to our feedback. As a result, national has provided several educational updates on Health Care Reform and the pending ICD-10 conversion. Furthermore, changes were made to the certification process this year to include a certification specific for members working within the revenue cycle, as well as continuing to offer the HFMA certification and fellowship. Currently, Northeast Ohio’s membership consists of 25 certified members or 5.1% of your total membership.  National has set a goal of 5.7% for Northeast Ohio this year.

In the coming months, my focus will be on visiting each chapter to learn what I can do to help improve your HFMA experience and communicate those findings back to our national board. In April of 2014, I will be ending my term as Regional Executive and Mary Whitbread (Eastern Michigan) will be taking over as regional executive. Mary has been working closely with me for the past year in the role of regional executive-elect. Replacing Mary in the role of regional executive elect is Barb Shelly (Western Michigan). Believe me when I say that the region is in good hands moving forward!

I will leave you with this challenge. Like anything in life, HFMA can only be as good as you make it.  If you have an idea for an educational or networking event, I encourage you to share your ideas with your local leadership.  Furthermore, I encourage you to get or stay involved by attending meetings, becoming a member or chairman of a committee or potentially becoming active in a leadership role. Who knows, one day you could be writing an article to the chapter as regional executive.

From the Editor’s Desk

In addition to publishing the quarterly newsletter, an expanded communications committee is also working on efforts to improve social media usage and our chapter website. All chapter members are encouraged to join the official Northeast Ohio HFMA LinkedIn group. From the group search page, enter HFMA – Northeast Ohio Chapter. Once the page appears, simply click the yellow Join button. As a group member, you will be able to receive reminders of upcoming events, breaking healthcare news and other updates from fellow members.

The committee is also planning to refresh the chapter website in coming months. A meeting will be held in November to discuss possibilities to make the site a great resource for years to come. Current plans include an electronic event payment option and mobile device format. Your thoughts and ideas are welcome and can be shared with committee chair Chris Maeder at Christopher.Maeder@uhhospitals.org.


Influence Future Leaders

Our chapter members have been offered an exciting opportunity to guide future healthcare finance leaders. Kent State University is looking for practicing professionals in the healthcare finance world who would like to affiliate with the university as adjunct faculty. They have an immediate need for someone to teach an undergraduate introductory course and a master's-level introductory course in health care finance. We're looking for someone who has technical as well as practical experience and can teach traditional college students and working professionals.

Great Lakes Brewery- July 31, 2013

On Wednesday July 31st, Great Lakes Brewery, in Cleveland’s historic Ohio City neighborhood, hosted HFMA’s Provider Relations Program. Great Lakes Brewing Company is one of Cleveland’s most popular destinations for dining and celebration and was a great setting for learning and an opportunity for networking.

The program kicked off with feature speakers Mark Schabel CEO, and Randy Tempest, Sr, Dir, Sales and Client Relations, from Receivables Management Partners located in Greensburg Indiana. “Going to the Finals- Leading your Team to Success,” was an enjoyment for all members in attendance, speaking to the Fundamentals of Leadership. One of the great quotes Mark Schabel delivered during their presentation was that “90 percent of success in life is a direct result of how much effort you are willing to put forth,” figure out what you are passionate about, enough to outwork everyone else in the world.

Other healthcare executives who spoke at the conference included Mike

, Director of Contract Economics, “The Current State of Healthcare Exchanges”, Robert Alt, Buckeye Institute, “Medicaid Expansion- Myth vs. Reality” and Joe Cimperman, Councilman, City of Cleveland, Ward 3, gave everyone an update on changes and improvements that are being made in Ohio City.  

Our program concluded with a networking opportunity and sampling from Great Lakes’ own fine beer and appetizer selection in their beautiful tasting room. Many thanks to Great Lakes Brewery for a wonderful experience!

Volunteer Appreciation Outing:
Quail Hollow/ Jack Arra’s Salon & Spa- August 22, 2013

After a round of golfOn Thursday August 22nd, Quail Hollow Country Club, in Concord Ohio, hosted HFMA’s Volunteer Appreciation Outing. Quail Hollow Country Club is nestled among 700 acres of wooded countryside and was a great location for the morning learning opportunity and the luxurious afternoon amenities.

wine tastingThe program kicked off with speakers Rosina M. Caponi Esq., and Amanda L. Waesch Esq, from Brennan, Manna & Diamnond LLC located in Akron, Ohio. They spoke to the topic of “Navigating the Affordable Care Act: Understanding the individual mandate, the employer mandate, and insurance exchanges”. Both attorneys spoke about the overall goals of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The exchange system of shopping for health insurance was a main topic that was discussed amongst all attendees, and was very informative for all members in attendance.

Our second speaker who spoke
at the conference was Jessie Baginski, Ph.D., Executive Director of Leadership in Lake County, presented “Leadership Importance of Volunteering”. Jessie highlighted the fact that leaders do not create followers, they create more leaders. A
video by DeWitt Jones was shown to emphasize celebrating what is right for the world. The interaction
with the speaker and all the attendees was a great and rewarding experience for everyone!   

golfersOur program concluded with a networking lunch on the back patio of the Country Club with a wonderful view of the pristine golf course. Lunch was followed by either the choice of a spa day or a round of golf for all the volunteers who contributed their time to HFMA the prior year. Many thanks to Quail Hollow Country Club, Jack Arra’s Salon & Spa for a wonderful experience and to all the volunteers of HFMA!

Four HFMA members need to cross a bridge at night to get to their after-hours party.  They have only one flashlight and 17 minutes to get there. The bridge must be crossed with the flashlight and can only support two members at a time. The Accountant can cross in 1 minute, the Revenue Cycle Director can cross in 2 minutes, the CFO can cross in 5 minutes and the Physician takes 10 minutes to cross. How can they all make it to the meeting in time?

  1. The Accountant takes the flashlight and crosses with the Revenue Cycle Director.  This takes 2 minutes
  2. The Accountant then returns across the bridge with the flashlight taking 1 more minute (3 minutes passed so far). 
  3. The Accountant gives the flashlight to the CFO.  The CFO and Physician cross together taking 10 minutes (13 minutes passed so far).
