President’s Message

It’s that time of year again! It’s your opportunity to let National know what a great chapter we have in Northeast Ohio.

On October 29th, National HFMA will be conducting a “Member Satisfaction Survey” on behalf of our chapter. You will receive this survey if you have been a member six months or longer. (Chapter Officers and Directors are excluded.)

Last year we had a 20% response rate, with an overall high satisfaction rate of 65%. This exceeded the 62% average for all HFMA chapters.

The results will be reported to the Chapter in January. As President, I can tell you that the Board, Officers and Committee Chairs take these results very seriously.  We celebrate and share with you the positive comments and we address specific needs identified for improvement. Below are the actions we implemented based on your feedback.

Chapter Networking Opportunities was selected as the top service we could improve.

The location of chapter programs and the educational topics addressed were tied for the second service as ways to improve.

So please, take the time to complete this survey soon after you receive it. As you can see, this is a key tool we use to plan chapter events. If you have specific ideas that you would like implemented, or need further clarification on anything, contact me or any other chapter leader directly. Our goal is to enhance the achievements of our chapter and we need your help. We want to make your Northeast Ohio chapter an essential part of your successful career.

Fall Chapter President's Meeting

Region Six Executive-Elect

Did you know that each year the leadership group of your HFMA chapter sends its President and Vice President, or President Elect to a 2-day regional idea exchange call the Fall President’s Meeting (FPM)? This includes volunteering a Sunday away from family and a half-day on a Monday.  The meeting’s agenda and format are created by HFMA National Staff in accordance with the challenges, events and hot topics of the 68 national chapters as well as what is happening in our region: Region 6.

Region 6 is comprised of 7 chapters, three of which are in Michigan and the other four in Ohio serving approximately 2,700 members. The tradition in Region 6 is a chapter hosts the meeting on a rotating basis and keeps it close to or within the region geography. This year the Northeast Ohio Chapter was our host and the meeting was held at the Cleveland Ritz-Carleton Hotel in downtown Cleveland, OH. Diane Lilko, the NE OH Chapter President and her team did a wonderful job in putting together an event that fostered both learning and networking.

Region 6The agenda of the meeting is facilitated by the Regional Executive and is there is never enough time scheduled to get through all the topics. Michael Freed, CFO of Spectrum Health System and a HFMA National Board Member, was able to give the group invaluable perspective from both his seat on the national board and his experience as a CFO of a large health system. Mike gave us an update from the National Board of Directors meetings as well.

Ed Czopek, Senior Vice President with HFMA gave us an opportunity to hear from HFMA’s highest level. His down-to-earth demeanor and wonderful sense of humor added to the group’s discussion with great insight. Ed specifically gave the group an overview on the changes at the national chapter support planning and some of the latest products and services from HFMA.

Regionally, the chapters discussed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to achieving the goals as set by the Chapter Balanced Scorecard in an environment of consolidating hospitals (mergers and acquisitions), travel budget cuts, system upgrades and shrinking staff. The group also recognized the unique opportunity to step up to the challenge of becoming THE resource for education and information for the ACA. Setting the schedule for the upcoming regional webinar series and the topics to be presented was deliberated to bring the membership of the region the best overall value in content and cost for the rest of the HFMA education year.

As protocol dictates the group heard the nomination and unanimously approved a new Regional Executive Elect-Elect to hold office in 2014-2015 from the Eastern Michigan Chapter. Mary Whitbread is a past president of Eastern Michigan and has worked on both the provider and payer side. She will follow current Regional Executive-Elect Chris Milligan from the Northeast Ohio Chapter after his term next year in 2013-2014. 

The last and maybe most important annual agenda item is to review and approve the Regional Operating Agreement (ROA). This year’s approval would take some lengthy discussion, as I felt this group had the ability to work through some lingering issues and reformat the ROA into a document that would work for years into the future. The dedication of this group of chapter leaders was amazing to be a part of as they worked together for the common good of the membership first and then the region as a whole.

The ROA was totally restructured to clarify the current operation of the region and to provide a foundation for future regional objectives. The basis for compromise and trust had been established earlier as the group had met in person and on multiple calls to begin building rapport (cracking open crabs and eating gator bites goes a long way in getting to know each other). Previously groups may have just met or haven’t seen each other for a year and maybe had an ice breaker to begin the FPM. It is nice to be a part of this special group who completed the job well done.

We did have some fun too! No, our region doesn’t travel to the South Pacific or cruise Alaska or the Bahamas as some regions do at FPM. We enjoyed a wonderful Cleveland Indians game with some family members joining us on a perfect September Sunday afternoon. The Indians played the Detroit Tigers so the Michigan versus Ohio theme was very much present! All the way to the toilet paper with the Tigers logo on it (a roll of it may have found its way into your facility)! Following the Tribe victory, we went back towards the hotel with plenty of options for entertainment and food in downtown Cleveland. It was a perfect afternoon to chat casually with counterparts in other chapters and learn more of how they were addressing the challenges in their chapter. You know: someone who knows how they feel.

Indians stadiumFinally, the Central Ohio Chapter began throwing out ideas on next year’s meeting as it will be their turn in the rotation for hosting FPM. It will be seven years since they last hosted, but I am sure Brian McAllister and his team will have a great meeting planned. Maybe you will be there too?

Your chapter leaders work hard to help your HFMA membership be the most valuable tool in your vocational quiver. Maybe you can help them with voicing your need for an educational topic or assist in the area of recommending a speaker? FPM is a time to get new ideas from peers to help attract and enthuse membership. It is a time of learning new things from national chapter support to rallying around a chapter struggling to make their goals. Feel free to ask your leaders to see copies of the ROA, FPM minutes or to put them on your chapter website.

It is only October but you can still meet that New Year’s resolution of getting involved in your local chapter.

Shovel the Driveway? Or Prepare for Certification?

SnowflakeWinter is quickly approaching and snow will soon be on the ground. Cold weather and fewer hours of daylight will make for a great opportunity for a personal accomplishment. There is no better time than NOW to start preparing for the HFMA’s Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) exam!   Everything you need to know about the CHFP designation can be found at:  http://www.hfma.org/chfp/

Here are some key points and highlights to help gear you up for the road to certification.

The CHFP Requirements are as follows: 

For the CHFP examination, there is preparation material (Core Curriculum Online Study) designed to identify and examine the fundamental concepts and skills expected of an experienced mid‐level healthcare finance manager. The Healthcare Finance Core Curriculum online study preparation for the CHFP examination is available for purchase. The cost for study materials is $195 ($295 for non-members). The materials are available for one calendar year from date of purchase. CHFP study materials are recommended but not required for CHFP testing candidates. 

Once you pass the CHFP exam and apply for and receive your certificate there are requirements to maintain the certification. HFMA members who have earned either the Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) or Fellow of HFMA (FHFMA) designation must maintain their certification by meeting two basic requirements:

So as you hibernate through the winter, why not make it a goal to prepare for and take the CHFP exam? Not only will you have a great excuse for not shoveling the driveway, but you will be glad to have achieved the goal of certification!

Program Recaps

Northeast Ohio HFMA Managed Care Program

This event was held at Windows on the River in Cleveland, OH on July 26, 2012.

Thomas Campanella, Associate Professor at Baldwin Wallace University, gave a presentation that helped the group understand better healthcare reform and its affect on risk arrangements as well as the health benefit exchange, and the Medicare managed care expansion. 

Dr. Gregory Young, Government Relations, Medical Mutual of Ohio, provided a presentation describing employers’ demands for lower costs and a value based benefit design.  Value based benefits will create benefit plan and provider selection, health promotion and disease management, health coaching, prescription drugs options, and preventive medical and drug services.  In addition, Dr. Young also discussed the importance of data transparency and consensus in reimbursement and performance measurement.

A managed care roundtable discussion was held.  The discussion included the implications for healthcare providers now that states have the ability to expand Medicaid eligibility, the long-term status of the Medicaid program in Ohio, the valued based purchasing payor program, and bundled payments, among other topics.  

Northeast Ohio HFMA Education Roadshow

An extension of the provider hosting education series, this event was held at LakeHealth Tripoint Medical Center in Concord Twp, OH on September 27, 2012.  Welcoming accommodations by Tripoint Medical Center allowed HFMA members and guests to listen and engage with three wonderful speakers.  The focus of this educational event was centered on physician alignment strategies.

Tanya Brasch and Art Vasquez, Senior Associates at Kaufman Hall presented provided a presentation on Getting Strategic about Cost Management.  The presentation focused on the creating sustainable cost transformation through changing the way business is done (cost management, cost structure & clinical utilization) and strengthening execution.

Jeffrey P. Kovacs, Finance Director, Partners Physicians Group, Akron General Medical Center presented on Trends in Physician Compensation.  The presentation centered on the different models for physician compensation such as straight salary, net income and net income plus market adjustment.  Also featured in the discussion were key insights on the limitations to using national data and current recruiting trends.

Stan Kasmarcak, CPA, Principal, Alta Partners LLC delivered a presentation entitled Managing the Margins of Employed Physicians: A Practical Approach to Increasing Your Physician’s Practice Income and Evaluating Performance.  The discussion focused on the importance of mastering the revenue cycle to ensure revenue maximization.  Additional topics covered included:

  1. Internal control management – warning signs that your internal controls might be compromised
  2. The value of EHR and for coding and claim submission
  3. Benchmarking to compare physician productivity

Northeast Ohio Volunteer Appreciation Program

The annual Volunteer Appreciation Program was held on August 30, 2012 at StoneWater Golf Club. This event combined a morning educational session with an afternoon networking event of golf or spa and gave chapter leaders the opportunity to thank those who were active in the chapter over the last year.

Crowe Horwath personnel, Jim Grigg, Partner and National Healthcare Audit Practice Leader, Carlos Hernandez, Senior Manager Audit Practice, and Jay Sutton, Senior Manager and Regulatory Consulting Services Practice Leader, discussed charity care reporting from a tax, financial reporting and regulatory perspective. They discussed the need to reconcile (i.e. “connect the dots”) for the charity care information presented in the footnotes to the audited financial statements, IRS Form 990, Schedule H, Medicare cost report, and community benefit reporting since there may be different definitions of charity care depending on the reporting.  They also discussed new accounting guidance related to the presentation of bad debt expense in the financial statements and the accounting for costs incurred during implementation of ICD-10.

Chris Milligan, Associate Vice President – National Sales, HumanArc, presented best practices to manage your uninsured population today and tomorrow. He discussed the state of the uninsured from a national, state and local level and best practices to manage the population from a patient access/registration and patient financial services perspective. Chris also highlighted the financial impacts and opportunities of effectively managing this population on Medicaid reimbursement, HCAP distribution, charity care and Medicare/Medicaid DSH and 340B.  Finally, Chris presented some considerations for providers relative to the uninsured under healthcare reform.

Kristy Frieden, President, Positive Performance Solutions, presented moving positively through change.  Change is a constant in the healthcare industry.  Kristy discussed the phases of transition and provided some techniques for staying positive during change. She also discussed several metaphors we could use for successful change and a model to promote accountability, responsibility and acceptance of change. She also discussed the question thinking process and challenged us to think whether we were a judger (e.g., whose fault is it, why bother, why is everyone so frustrating) or a learner (e.g., what happened, what can I learn, what are my choices) when faced with change.

Following the education sessions and lunch, participants headed to either the golf course to play on what was a beautiful sunny afternoon and or to the spa for an afternoon of pampering. It was a great day to network and thank our many volunteers for their efforts and dedication to the Northeast Ohio chapter.
